Memorial dos 500 Anos in São Vicente

A viewpoint in São Vicente with beautiful views both from the top and along the way up. Unfortunately, it’s temporarily closed for renovation.

The monument was opened to celebrate Brazil’s 500th anniversary. It’s designed in the shape of a hang glider pointing toward Brasília.

An interesting idea and a beautiful location — it stands on Porchat Island, although until recently it looked a bit neglected.

The structures were quite worn, and in some places the view was partially blocked by trees.

Good news is that the place is finally being renovated. It’ll be interesting to see how it looks afterwards. The city hall occasionally posts updates about the work on their Instagram.

You can drive all the way to the viewpoint, but walking there is much more interesting. We saw plenty of runners along the way.

Some older local women warned us to hide our phones because the area might not be very safe.

But everything was fine. We walked, enjoyed the views, and nobody bothered us.

Lev brought binoculars that his grandfather had given him. He used them to look at the houses below — including ours.

Eva, at that moment, didn’t really care where she was being carried.

Sasha and I really enjoyed the walk though. It was genuinely beautiful. We’ll definitely come back once the monument reopens.

Even with the monument closed for renovation, the walk there is still lovely. Sometimes the views along the way are the best part anyway.

Enjoy your walks too.

Tchau!
